Abstract:
Introduction: Postcoital bleeding is often linked to serious gynaecological conditions, including cervical cancer, which is primarily caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection. It occurs in 11% of cervical cancer cases but can be confused with benign conditions such as leiomyomas and cervical polyps, thus delaying diagnosis and treatment. Case Presentation: A 29-year-old woman with a one-year history of post-coital bleeding and vaginal discharge was initially diagnosed as uterine fibroids. Client underwent myomectomy in a private health facility but the clinician suspected a malignant uterine tissue intra-operatively. However, histopathological examination was not enforced. The persistence of her symptoms after myomectomy resulted in a referral to the district hospital where further evaluation showed advanced cervical cancer. Conclusion: This case depicts the consequences of misdiagnosis and over-reliance on ultrasonography by clinicians. It emphasizes the importance of comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and early intervention to improve patient outcome.
